New Construction Scholarship Programme launched.

Glasgow Caledonian University has announced a new construction scholarship programme funded by GCU alumnus and international businessman, Khalid Abdul Rahim.

The Khalid Abdul Rahim Construction Scholarship Programme was officially launched following a lunch at the House of Lords for friends of the university on 9th June, hosted by GCU’s Chancellor, Lord Macdonald of Tradeston.

The scale of the programme, which has been funded for an initial five years, is such that it will have a sustained and beneficial impact for Built and Natural Environment students over many years to come.

The scholarships may be used to fund international study tours, internships and cultural elements related to the Middle East - including the study of Arabic - and are open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Khalid Abdul Rahim who graduated with an MSc Construction Management from GCU in 2005 and now heads his own multi-billion dollar construction company, wants to provide opportunities for talented students and in particular those individuals who would need financial support to commence or complete their education.

The scholarship programme will make the first awards in the 2010/11 academic year.

The Dean of GCU’s School of Built and Natural Environment, Peter Kennedy, said:

“We are delighted that Khalid, one of our former students, has made this possible and look forward to the first cohort of KAR Scholars and their subsequent success stories, experiences and personal growth. Lives will be changed, shaped and influenced. These will be truly international, world class experiences for ambitious and talented individuals.”
